Planning for office moves
The movement of any computer equipment
can have a drastic effect on a company's
viability if it is not planned carefully and
undertaken efficiently. In this day and age,
how many companies can afford to be without
their computer systems for several hours, let
alone several days?

- irrespective of size or distance - should

At Hallamshire Solutions, we believe
there is no IT project that will not
benefit from proper planning and control.
At one end of the spectrum, this may simply
be a list of tasks and the order in which
they need to be performed, with someone
checking that things are happening when they

meetings, with someone with a complete

System security
Company confidential data is one of the most valuable assets
a company possesses. Loss or corruption of your data can, at
best, mean a lot of work rebuilding and verifying it. At worst,
it could give your competitors the edge they need, or could mean
you find yourself in front of the regulators to explain the
loss. In any event, it is likely to mean a significant amount of
unnecessary work and expense. At Hallamshire Solutions, we have
experience in designing and implementing strategies to help
protect computer systems from attacks and data loss.
Malware
Most sorts of malware, such as viruses
and trojans, are either downloaded when
visiting an infected website, are introduced
via an already infected device such as a USB
device, mp3 player or, commonly, on a CD or
DVD. Once the malware is on a computer, it
will usually attempt to replicate to other
computers it can find, and will then start
to do whatever else the creator planned, be
it corrupting data or capturing keystrokes
so that passwords can be discovered.
There are three separate lines of protection
which would stop the spread of malware.
Firstly, and probably most importantly, a
good quality, business anti-virus system
should be installed on each computer on the
network. This should also be capable of
scanning any incoming emails for malware.
Secondly, some method of preventing
unauthorised devices from being connected to
a computer. Not only will this help prevent
malware being introduced, but may also help
controlling data loss.
Lastly, a method of controlling internet
access could limit the opportunities for
people to accidentally distribute
confidential information. It could also
limit the possibility of people accessing of
inappropriate or illegal web content, which
could leave the company directors with a lot
of questions to answer, were it ever to be
discovered.
Data Security
We've all heard the horror stories of confidential data
accidentally being left on busses and trains, but how much goes
unreported or worse, undetected? There are several ways we can
help you to limit the possibility of data being lost or stolen.
Firstly, make sure that any data being taken off site is on an
encrypted device, no matter if it is a laptop, a USB device or a
CD/DVD.
Secondly, control what devices can be connected to a computer.
This will help prevent data being copied without permission, or
data which is copied and then forgotten.
Perhaps the most secure method of all is to not allow data to be
removed, but to provide people with a method of connecting
securely from a remote device and accessing the data that way.
Not only does this greatly reduce the possibility of data being
lost, but it also means that the latest data is available.
Another area you should consider when thinking about data
security are ways of backing up the data. Although hard drives
(especially on servers) are becoming more and more reliable, it
is still possible for a drive to fail and data to be lost. In
most cases, data is lost through an “Oops moment” (that
split-second between hitting delete or save, and you realising
that you really didn’t want to do that!). In either event, a
reliable backup system would have the data back in place, with a
minimum loss of productivity.

At Hallamshire Solutions, we have
experience in a number of different
development languages. Included in these
languages are a number on old, legacy
systems. Depending on the system and
development language, we may be able to help
